Welcome to Batibo Alumni Association (BATAAS)

TOTAL INVOLVEMENT FOR HIGHER HEIGHTS

BATAAS includes former students from ETC, PTTC, P.S.S. Mbengwi, PSS Batibo, and PHS Batibo. The association welcomes anyone who has lived on Guka Hill for a minimum of one year, irrespective of their educational completion at that campus. Aligned with the overarching mission, BATAANS unite to celebrate their shared heritage, utilize their resources, explore ways to attain the vision they have for their Alma Mater, and implement projects aimed at sustaining P.H.S. Batibo's reputation as one of the premier educational institutions in Cameroon, thus providing support to an institution that established a strong foundation and instilled in them the discipline, knowledge, and survival skills essential to becoming who they are today. BATAANS also look inwardly, by providing mutual assistance to each other, act as mentors to young Bataans, as well as current students at P.H.S. Batibo. The alma mater also carries out projects that are beneficial to all its members, such as operating a microfinance institution (BATSCCUL) can foster the growth of its members, affiliates and the general public. Bataans regroup regularly in different branches in Cameroon and abroad. At the moment, there are 13 active branches. Classmates also come together to share their experiences and relive their experiences on campus Each year, there is an Annual General Meeting bring together all the Branches in order to take stock of the activities of the past year and plan for the future. This meeting is usually hosted by a Bataan branch. During the AGM, funds are raised to carry out projects on campus geared towards making life easy and comfortable for current students.

Guka Hill strikingly stands out as one of the magnificent hills along the Bali-Widikum road. These hills mark out an undulating scenery that culminates in the spectacular Bamenda Highlands. Until the late nineteen forties, the hill was covered with green savannah grass and deciduous trees, including raffia palms. This feature made it a haven for reptiles, porcupines, squirrels and other animals that relish the savannah vegetation.

In 1949, the Basel missionaries started the first Basel Mission secondary educational institution in the then Southern Cameroons (on the undulating Hills of Guka), named Elementary Teachers College (ETC) Batibo. (In the same year, a similar institution was being opened in nearby Bali, but it was a joint project with the Baptist missionaries. Therefore, it was named Cameroon Protestant College (CPC) Bali). It was created and opened to train teachers for the numerous primary schools which the Basel mission had opened in different parts of Southern Cameroon. Most teachers then were holders of the First School Leaving Certificate, which was obtained at the standard six level, after eight years of primary education. They were generally called probationary teachers. The opening of ETC in Batibo provided such teachers with the opportunity to receive training to become professional teachers at the Grade III level. For fifteen years, the institution had nurtured and admonished teachers at this level to feed the Basel Mission primary schools and even those of the Councils.

In 1961, after Southern Cameroons had taken the option for a federated state with East Cameroon, the mission and the state of West Cameroon realised that there were very few Grade II teachers in the field. In order to fill this gap, the Elementary Teachers College in Batibo was upgraded to a Higher Elementary Teachers Training College in 1964. It trained both Grade III and Grade II teachers, giving them both the knowledge and wisdom to manage West Cameroon primary education. When the Basel Missionaries handed over their assets to the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, ETC was renamed Presbyterian Teacher Training College, Batibo

In September 1973, the Presbyterian Secondary (PSS) Batibo was established with Mr . Zachariah Memoh as its first Principal. It is worth noting that students who were in PSS Mbengwi were transferred to the newly created PSS Batibo, and their campus was closed down.

After another fifteen years, in 1988, P.S.S. Batibo was upgraded to a high school, hence the name changed to Presbyterian High School (P.H.S), Batibo, which has kept the faith of Guka to date, and has established a norm to produce outstanding results in the General Certificate of Education results at both the ordinary and advanced levels. This is the long journey of the nursery of wisdom on Guka Hill, and Bataans are a testament to total involvement for higher height

Water is life

It is for this reason that bataans took upon themselves to guarantee a steady supply of water on Guka Hil. We are grateful to one of our most distinguished Bataan, who personally accepted the responsibility of ensuring that this project is completed in a short amount of time by his extremely kind financial gift. Bataans will always be appreciative of you.

Campus Electrification Project

Future project preview

Bataans are dedicated to making campus life better. Our next initiative is to electrify the campus with solar power so that staff and students have a steady source of electricity all year long. This is essential to maintaining a comfortable learning environment and a high standard of living on campus. The ongoing borehole project, which needs energy to pump water throughout the campus, will also be made easier by this initiative.
